BUDGET MARINE WAHOO BLOWOUT

Article by TTGFA (Trinidad & Tobago Game Fishing Association)

On the 24th & 25th of February 2018, the Trinidad and Tobago Game Fishing Association hosted its annual Budget Marine Wahoo Blowout tournament. The tournament usually focuses on Wahoo as the primary species but due to a continuous decline in fish stock from unregulated fishing in and around our coastal waters, the committee had no option but open up to other species to try to increase catch and participation. The tournament only attracted 10 boats this year comprising of 46 anglers. This was a direct result of poor fishing and rough seas offshore. In total 143 pounds of fish were caught in two days with over 80lbs of it donated to the Christ Child Convalescent home. We also had 2 Sailfish successfully caught and released by our winning boat, which braved the weather and traveled to Tobago in hopes of a more fruitful catch.

Captain Dominic Wallace with crew Dean Fakoory and Glen Charlotte on board the vessel ‘Roller Troller’ took first place in this year’s tournament and was the only boat to successfully put Wahoo on the scale. After braving the weather on day one and fishing off of the Sisters in Tobago, Wallace and crew came to the scale with two Sailfish releases and a Wahoo weighing in at 11.9 pounds. Narrowly making the 10 pound minimum weight, it was the only Wahoo to make the scale on Saturday. Chelsea Lock on the boat Queen B also graced the scale on Saturday with a Dorado weighing in at 11.75 pounds. This gave Queen B and captain Trevor Bhagwansingh enough to win second place and also won Chelsea best female angler for the tournament. On Sunday the fishing was even more dismal as many boats opted to cut their day short and head back in for a swim. With the tournament already won Wallace and his crew decided to stick it out till the end and hope for the best. After having their lines recklessly cut off by the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard doing routine checks in the area, they could’ve easily called it a day, as there was only a couple hours left of fishing. Again the crew on ‘Roller Troller’ decided to regroup and stick to the plan. With most of his tackle now at the bottom of the ocean, Wallace had to dig deep into his tackle box where he found the most hideous red and yellow Sea Witch, a favorite of the late, great, local captain, Gary Story. “This one is for you Gaff” as Wallace set back his spread and continued trolling up and down the southern coast of Chacachacare Island. As the five ‘o’ clock cut off approached, it was now time for everyone to pull up their lines and head back to dock for the ‘weigh in’ where no one had caught any fish for the day....Then, divine intervention: While retrieving their lines in order to head back to port, the right rigger line gets bit and line is now screaming off the reel sending Wallace and Fakoory into a state of excitement and most of all disbelief. When the dust settled the crew found themselves back at the weigh station with seconds to spare. Their Wahoo weighing in at 62.6 pounds was the biggest catch of the tournament and the lure they caught it on?...You guessed it!

Lots of positives to be taken away from this year’s tournament as well as attributes that lack in modern society. A little bit of faith mixed with hard work and effort will always give you the results that you deserve.

As a country the laws pertaining to our fisheries and coastal waters are both irrelevant and antiquated. A lot has happened to fish stock in the past 20 years and laws must be updated and enforced to ensure stability both from a commercial and recreational point of view. As people we need to be more sustainable and what we do, negative or positive, makes an impact on others around us.

We would like to thanks our sponsors once again: Budget Marine, Carib and the Ministry of Sport for their continued support in this tournament and our push to promote sport fishing and conservation in Trinidad and Tobago

For the fifth year in a row, Trinidad and Tobago have proven themselves to be among the most skilled Sport fishermen in the world. One the heels of our 2016 victory, we have once again graced the podium of the Offshore World Championships. The tournament held in Quepos, Costa Rica every year is considered to be the ‘Olympics of Sport Fishing’. As top teams from all over the world gather to compete for this prestigious honor. After 4 days of fishing, competing against 47 other teams and over 250 anglers, all of the Trinidad and Tobago’s teams have finished their way into the top ten, with representatives from last year’s championship team finished in third place.

Mention must also be made of our top angler this year: Conrad Skinner, for finishing third overall out of 256 anglers in the individual Category.

The Trinidad and Tobago Game Fishing Association’s 34th International “Marlin Madness” tournament that was held on April 29th to May 3rd at Pigeon Point, Tobago was again a huge success. The Ministry of Sport, the Tobago House of Assembly and Carib Pilsner Light are the main sponsors of the tournament.

Captain Victor Sinarine and crewmembers of team Victory made a good start on the opening day by reeling in a massive seven hundred and seventy-five and a half pound Atlantic Blue Marlin. Farouk Ali was the lucky angler that reeled in the monster catch. Hundreds of locals and tourists gathered on the iconic Pigeon Point jetty to get a glimpse of the trophy fish while it was being hoisted on the IGFA certified scale. This was all being done under the watchful eye of international judge, Pete Tyson. However, despite the many rounds of applause that the big haul created, it did not put team Victory in a winning position at the end of the first day. Instead, it was team Houdini, Captained by Alan Fitzwilliam that had the honour of leading the pack of twenty-three teams.

Alan, along with crewmember, Christian Valdez had reeled in two Atlantic Blue Marlins each to put their team in first position when all lines were pulled in at four thirty in the afternoon.

Team Houdini had no releases on the second day so they relieved their top position to Bounty Hunter. By the third and final day, it was Captain Gerard “Frothy” de Silva on board his new vessel Gold Spoon, which stole the show and was awarded best boat of the tournament.

Captain Gerard “Frothy” de Silva along with crewmembers David Wong, Andrew Llanos, Adrian de Silva, David Maharaj, Shammon Walker and Roderick Joseph released a record nine billfish: four Blue Marlins and five Sailfish over the three-day tournament.

Team Blue Fever 2 captained by Travis Ali placed second overall with GiGi 2 captained by Winston Chonh Ashing in third place.

At the prize-giving function, which was held at Crown Point Hotel, the Director of Sport at the Ministry of Sport of Trinidad & Tobago, Dave Bobb, thanked the many anglers that came from all parts of the globe to participate in the annual event. Some travelled from as far away as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Scotland and other parts of the Caribbean.

Of the one hundred and fifteen anglers, only one was female and two were junior anglers. Between them all, they released a record eighty-three billfish: sixty-six Blue Marlins and seventeen Sailfish. Only one Blue Marlin made it to the scale as the minimum weight was increased by the TTGFA from five hundred pounds to seven hundred pounds this year. In all, there were more than two hundred billfish strikes.

Gordon Dalgliesh, on board Bald Head was named best overall angler and Eleza Tafovic of team Full Circle copped the best female angler prize.

Adam Aleong of team Barracuda won the best junior angler prize.

The year 2013 was an eventful year for the Trinidad and Tobago game fishing fraternity as a grander was caught for the first time in any Southern Caribbean tournament. Young Brendan Bernard of Trinidad reeled the monster catch in on board Predator. In 2008, the junior Atlantic Blue Marlin world record was broken by another Trinidad born angler, Sean Mendonca. With this year’s big catch, Tobago is once again on the world map as one of the top fishing destinations.

At the prize-giving function, the president of the TTGFA, Marylin Sheppard complimented the teams for their outstanding performances in breaking all previous records for total billfish caught in any tournament in Tobago and reminded anglers that the future of the sport relies on them using circle hooks. She pointed out to anglers that these hooks are more successful than J hooks in hook up ratio and the fish almost never get deep hooked.

On the night of prizegiving, the TTGFA also gave a donation of TT$10,000 to Healing with Horses charity in Tobago.

Sheppard thanked the many sponsors including the Ministry of Sport, the Tobago House of Assembly, Carib Pilsner Light, Digicel, Petro-Canada, Standard Motor Supplies Ltd, Evian, Gatorade, Reel Tackle & Seafood Ltd, Casafab Ltd and Black Bart lures.

Dear Members,

URGENT:

This is an urgent appeal to all those that go Down The Islands, out the Boca's, etc.

Over the past few years there has been a drastic increase in the number of larger and faster cruisers/sportfishing boats, and as a result, most of the the low lying homes and their respective jetties are being damaged by the huge wakes left by these vessels. Many homeowners have spent huge sums of money shoring up their properties shorelines because of this rapid erosion being caused. The risk of someone being seriously injured from the huge waves caused by the aftermath of these vessels going by is ever increasing. One can speculate that it was the newer (less experienced) boaters that were the main culprits, however, this is not the case as many seasoned boaters with years of experience, who should know better, but just don’t seem to care! This appeal goes out to these persons to have some compassion before someone is badly injured, or even killed.

This really relates to the larger vessels that reside at the TTYC, Crews Inn, Sweet Water, Coral Cove, and other Marinas in and around the Western Penninsula, and also the SFYC. Many persons are already complying, however there are still many boats passing at full speed without regard for homeowners’ safety and property.

Some of the problems occuring are:

Personel safety - Persons being loaded and offloaded onto jetty's.

Cargo Safety - Loading and offloading goods onto the jetty's.

Damage to Jetties and Houses.

Coastal Erosion of the land.

This location map shows some proposed "No Wake Zones".
